Yarn from our Exmoor Horn ewes.

As our smallholding is nestled in the hills just below the National park, we couldn't really have a flock of sheep without the local breed - the Exmoor Horn.

We have two gentle giants that we bought from a local smallholding. They are horned, as the name suggests, and were named by the kids in the family as Innie and Outie - to reflect their different horn shapes!

We blade sheared the ewes on Easter Sunday. Blade shearing is a much healthier and natural way to shear sheep - there is no electrical noise, the sheep are left with a small covering of wool to stop them getting too cold or hot. The raw fleeces were sent to a small scale family-run mill in Yorkshire to be washed and made into slivers.

Perfect for felting and other projects. The staple length is mixed and includes some shorter pieces. Exmoor Horn isn't known for its suitability for clothing next to the skin but this would make excellent fleece for winter jumpers, rugs, felting, peg looming, and socks.

All purchases help us to continue to look after the breed and encourage more people to use rare breed wool and woollen products.
